APOLOGUE’S CUP. It was tho 46th Melbourne Cup which was run on Tuesday _ last, when for the first time in the history of the race, a Now Zealand owned and trained horse was returned the winner. Apologue, tho horse to have his name enrolled upon the scroll of fame, was bred in Auckland by Messrs L. D, and N. A. Nathan, and is owned by Mr R. Oleland, a prominent bookmaker, resident in Auckland. As a yearling, Apologue was bought cheaply by Mr M. Pricdlander, of Canterbury, for 225 guineas, and when ho sent the horse up to auction six mouths later the bidding for his possession only reached 255 guineas. It may he mentioned that tho news of Apologue’s win was put on the wires at Plemiugtou at 3.40 p.m.—or 5.10 according to New Zealand time—and was received here, via tlio Pacific cable route, ten minutes later, viz., at 5. SO.

THE GAMBLING BILL. Writing'ou the subject of the new Gambling Bill, Christchurch Truth savs We do not profess to understand why the Government should have included a saving danse to prevent the total extinction cf the bookmaker, but it allows a club to license him, and thou considerately closes the totalisator five minutes before the advertised time of starting a race, to enable him to do business under the most favourable conditions. This is just the time when speculation -is at its ‘highest, and in those fow minutes before the race actually started, the bookmaker would reap a golden harvest, It is suggested that it rests witli the club to issue a license or not as it chooses, but iu our opinion the clause is mandatory, at anyrate in respect to those bookmakers who could show that they had always conducted their business properly. It states: ‘Ercry’raciug chib which is authorised to use the totalisator shall, upon application, issue licenses to fit and proper persons to carry on business as bookmakers on the club’s course. ’ The danse does not, as has been suggested, contempate providing bookmakers for those clubs unable to secure a totalisator permit, and it is quite clear that it contemplates their doing business in opposition to the totalisator.!’
