DISTRICT NOTES.

By Our Travelling Repeater. During the summer months the ‘ 'Bangitikci County Council have had their road machine engaged in carrying out a piece of work that will be greatly appreciated by the travelling public. Since the advent of the motor car the Greatford -Marton main road has not been too safe with a nervous horse, ou account of the deep drains and water tables at the roadside. Several minor accidents haVO occurred on different parts of the road. Any danger in that respect has now, been removed by the levelling of the - drains and the’ formation of a summer road. This will have the dual advantage of giving freedom to drivers, also effecting a considerable saving in maintenance on the metal road. The growing importance of the township of Utiku, and the large a mount of business at the railway station has necessitated the erection 0 f a larger building. The foundation and part of the frame for the new offices are already in position. It is understood that a diversity of opinion exists as to the best place for the post office. Whether the public will he better served by having the postal business transacted in the business portions of the town as at present or at the railway station is a point that remains to ho decided. In the meantime the new building remains at a standstill, until the authorities come to a decision in the matter. ' .... Those interested in stock sales win note that Messrs Gorton and oou are holding an extra sale at Bulls y«rus this mouth, the entries for which appear in our advertising columns. This is the first time m the history of the firm that it has been found necessary to hold two sales in March. It is to bo hoped that this is an indication of the growing importance 0 f Bulls as a stock centre and that the firm will find it necessary to hold two sales in every mouth throughout the year. During the last few years equestrian events have become prominent and attractive features in almost every sporting programme. It is suggested that the time has arrived that it is necessary for some coutrolliu"’ body to ho formed to frame a standard set of regulations that will introduce uniformity in the management of the events. Sports committees are often placed in an awkward position in deciding irregularities on the part of competitors and they have no one to appeal to for a decision. The difficulty is well-known to those who have had any experience ou committees. It should he possible for interested clubs and other bodies interested to form a union that would assure protection to owners and management. As it is now each club lias its own rules, and what is considered fair in one district is not allowed in another which often results in dissatisfaction to both parties. Judges could also bo appointed by the Union and would have power behind them if they cautioned or wished to disqualify any horse, whose owner wds guilty of corrupt practices.
