MERCER.

Hockey Club Ball. Tim Mercer Ladies' Hockey Club ball, hold on Friday night, was very successful. The floor space of tho Rowing Club's hall was crowded to its utmost capacity. A groat many of the ladios were in fancy dressjome of tho "rigs" being effective. Amongst tho mVHpre wore not so many iu fancy was a masque ball HandsonHpriaes wore given for the best drosPsvthe " most original" being won by Miss Clarke (poster land and estalo agent) and Mr A. Smith (monkey.) ?or the best dresses the awards went'to Miss Pullham (Persian lady) and Mr Ilarrold (artillery captain). It was unfortuT nate that the judge.-! were not properly informed as to the intention of the prize-givers. For tho '* mostorigiual " it appears that the was intended for the best "made ftthome" dress, but the judging was;not done fromthat viewpoint. It is always a bother to the judges and unsatisfactory to the competitors when tfye conditions of the competition ate npt clearly understood. | Amongst the ladifes some of the * dresses stood out conspicuously—Mrs Valentine (Kitty If flairs), Miss L. Wright (Gipsy Fortiine Teller), Miss Lily Pickett (Bridge), Miss Gallery (Sport), Miss Beaimsh (Japanese), Miss N. Sweeney (Pjing Pong), Miss Drabble (Starlight),! Miss Eoose (Blue Bell), Miss V. Keata (Music), Miss J. Eobinson (Gipsy), K. Sweeney (Yachting giil), MissiKew (Dutch girl), Miss Soppett (Bailorjgirl), Miss Coleman (Gipsy), Missi Wright (Swiss peasant), Miss E. Puckett (Highland lassie), Beamish (grass widow), Miss Htmkau (footballer) and a few others names I could not get. Mercer hadSthe opportunity of seeing the harem skirt, of mellow silk, worthy Miss Lou\Picke:t. Tnere were some nice ovt\ingi froqks wofti. Amongst the men in fancy dress were Messrs Seymour (Waitress), Hewitt (Clown), Tribe (Oificer), I. Barron (Clown) and 1). Sweeney (Territorial). The decorations were very complete. Supper was supplied in a marquee and the whole i'unctiuu was voted most enjoyable.
