NOVEMBER MEETING Engineer and Staff Congratulated The November meeting of the Matamata County Council, on Thursday, was attended by Mr. E. D. White (chairman), and Crs. C. Bruce (Karapiro), H. T. A. McGahan (Wanarcja), A. J. Carter (Matamata), D. McCarthy (Peria), rt. H. Brinkworth (Hinuera), J. E. Davidson (Te Poi), H. W. Tinkler. (Tirau), J. E. Duxfield (Putaruru), i. K. Wood (Lichfield), G. C. Dunham (Tokoroa) and J. Watson (Maungatautari). . . .Also in attendance were the clerk (Mr. J. A.- Beck) and the engineer (Mr. G. W. Ensor). Present at the meeting was Mr. L. L. Cook, who has been elected unopposed to represent the Hinuera riding in succession to Mr. Brinkworth, who is not seeking re-election. Mr. Brinkworth, who has represented the Hinuera riding for the past years, stated tnat tor business reasons he had been unable to accept nomination. His term ot office had been a very happy one. More Tars-salizig The county engineer reported that good progress had been made during October with major improvement works. A total of 16,430 gallons of tar and bitumen Were used on various roads. Details of this work were as follow: — Matamata-Tauranga: The approaches to the Omahine Bridge were metalled and bridge opened to traffic. Putaruru-Tapapa: A further 525 cubic yards of base course metal was delivered and spread.. Maungatautari Road: Approximately 60 chains at Judds Flai were given a first coat of tar, and jne mile between Heads and Scotts Roads was primed with tar primer and tar. Whitehall Road: The full reconstructed length of 120 chains :'rou. Road junction to Grinter’s quarry entrance was primed with light car and bitumen. Hinuera - Matamata Road: A length of 90 chains from Domain entrance to XA railway crossing was given a coat of tar. Okoroire-Te Poi Road: A length of 65 chains near the Raparapa junction was given a second coat of road oil bitumen. Waitoa-Tirau: About COO gallons of road oil was used in patching sections of this highway north anc south of Matamata. Tirau-Okoroire Road: All earthwork has been completed on the rirau-Hetheringtons Road section. A very short length cf filling which became waterlogged is impassable, nowever, and traffic is still being diverted. A bulldozer and carryall are employed on the Okoroire section. Good progress is being made with the heavy earthwork involved, although the showery conditions arc proving a hindrance. Congratulations to Staff Cr. Davidson congratulated the engineer on the amount of work that had been carried out during the year. Recently the weather had been kind, but earlier there had been patchy weather, so that the progress made was very satisfactory. The Chairman: I think the whole of our outside staff should be congratulated. We hear complaints that men are not giving value for the wages they receive, but I am sure the county council is getting value for the wages it pays. Cr. Davidson agreed, commenting on the way the men had worked which had impressed him as he passed them. Cr. D. McCarthy. It looks like a contractor’s gang ! Acknowledging these tributes, the engineer said that if the council’s :.ta£f knew their efforts were appreciated they would work with all the more enthusiasm in the future.
