WOMEN’S DIVISION

TOKOROA BRANCH There was a fair attendance of members at the March meeting, presided over by the vice-president, Mrs L. Newell. The hall was gay with large bowls of dowers delightfully arranged by Mrs H. Boone. It was decided to carry on with stalls at football matches, conjointly with the Flunket Society. Mrs W. West gave a report on the St. John Ambulance Association meeting held recently.

Members were reminded that next meeting would be the annual meeting, and new officers would be elected. Members were also reminded to bring along their potatoes grown from the three given them in the spring. An invitation was read for members to attend the first birthday meeting of the Tokoroa Women’s Institute to be held in April. The roll call, “the oldest thing in the house,” proved most interesting, some most unusual and old fashioned articles being shown, some of very great age.

Mrs J. Hassall gave a talk on smocking with patterns and examples of work from Massey College.

A sketch entitled “It’s a Pleasure,” was enacted by Mrs C. Morcom and Mrs Thorbum, and certainly gave “pleasure”, to the audience, all enjoying a hearty laugh. The hostessfljt for the afternoon were ipss N. Kendall and Mesdames C. Morcom, Thorbum, W. Dunlop, W. West, ~H. Boone and H. Blain. These ladies served a dainty afternoon tea. Competitions resulted: soft stem bloom, Mesdames H. Boone 1, E C. Goodrick 2, L. Newell 3; hard stem bloom, Mesdames H. Boone 1, R. A. Kirkman 2, A. Hogg and J. Mossop 3; vegetable: Mesdames H. Boone 1, A. Hogg 2; jam tart, Mrs A. Hogg 1; circulating shilling, Mrs W. West.

Hostesses for next month will be Mesdames D. Blain, L. Cook, F. Colson, P. Munro and F. Gillies. The annual flower show held recently by the Tokoroa Women’s Division, though not as large as in previous years, presented a pleasing display of work, indicative of much care and thought by the exhibitors. Trophies were distributed as follows: W.D. F.F. Cup for most points in show, Mr F. W. Colson; cup for open dahlias, Mr F. W. Colson; cup for most points in all flower sections, Mr F. W. Colson; Phyllis Sloper Rose Bowl (gladioli), Mrs J. Turner; Sloper Memorial Rose Bowl (cut flowers), Mr F. W. Colson; Newell Cup (vegetables), Mrs L. A. Newell; Colson Cup (needlework), Mrs E. Colson’s “Daily Mail”; champion medium decorative dahlia, Mr Colson’s “Jean Howell”; champion charm dahlia, Mr Colson’s “Mary Alice”; champion gladioli, Mrs P. Munro’s “Samuel Chedrick”. Thanks are due to Mr and Mrs J. Gardiner, of Matamata, who judged the flower and decorative sections, Mrs Peebles for judging the needlework, and Mr F. G. Blackwell for judging the vegetables.
