ASSAULT AT WAHAROA

NUIE ISLANDER CHARGED On a change of assaulting his wife, a Nuie Islander, Robert Richmond Jackson, factory hand, of Waharoa, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Matamata on Thursday last, before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M. Accused was represented by Mr. B. W. Bell. Constable Moore stated that he had ibeen called to the scene of a fire on the evening in question, and found Mrs. Jackson there with injuries to her head. It hiad transpired that Jackson and his wife had been to Putaruru that day, arriving home at Waharoa about 6.45 p.m. A quarrel had apparently arisen resulting- in Jackson striking his wife twice, the second time knocking her down. She had left the house and been attended to by a St. John Ambulance man in the township. Later, the house was found to be on fire. The constable stated that accused had been drinking at Putaruru that day and was under the influence of liquor. iMr. Bell, for Jackson, said that accused and' his wife had been living unhappily for some time and differences were frequent between them. Jackson had been under the influence of liquor at the time and had lost control of himself. Counsel stated that his client was regarded as an excellent worker by his employers and had- been- employed for 12 months at the local factory. Jackson was admitted to probation for a period of 12 months on the usual conditions, and a further special condition that he take out a prohibition order against himself immediately and renew the order before the expiry of his term of probation.
