MUSICAL FESTIVAL

OUTSTANDING SUCCESS The musical festival held at Tirau on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights of last week, when Madame Dili Knaus and Mr. Robert Pikler played Beethoven’s ten sonatlas:. for the piano and violin, proved an outstanding success. There was ' a large attendance every night, many music lovers having travelled to Tirau from all over the Auckland and Rotorua districts to hear the recital. Madame Kraus’ brilliancy as a pianist is well known, And Robert Pikler, who has arrived only recently in New Zealand, proved to be an outstanding violinist. Together their delightful interpretations -of the sonatas provided deep enjoyment and complete satisfaction. The audience on all three nights gave vent to their feelings by long and hearty applause. On Wednesday night, after the final three sonatas had been played, a special item was given, in that another composition of .Beethoven’s was played, the two artists being joined l by Mrs. Pikler on the ’cello. This item too- proved extremely enjoyable. and the audience showed its appreciation. '■ ' ■ A beautiful bouquet was presented to Madame Kraus and a charming shoulder spray to Mrs. Pikler, after which Mr. G- Barnett thanked the artists, and made a brief farewell speech to Madame Kraus, her husband, Dr. Mandl, and Mr. and Mrs. Pikler. Dr. Mandl replied and stated they would always remember the wonderful reception they had received at Tirau. IHe mentioned that much of the success of the venture had been due to Miss Peggy Barnett, and he asked all to acknowledge this by applause. Miss Barnett was warmly applauded. A special supper was: served, and as the occasion was the anniversary df Madame Kraus’ first visit to Tirau, a beautiful cake had been made and occupied a .prominent position on the table, which had been tastefully decorated. Madame Kraus cut the cake, and was accorded musical honours. The -guests then mingled informally with the large gathering, and many took the opportunity of meeting this fine, generous woman, Madame Kraus, who has endeared herself to so many in this district.
