TRANSPORT LICENSING AUTHORITY

SITTING AT PUTARURU Mr. E. J. Phelan, No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority, held a sitting at Putaruru on Thursday of last week, when a number of applications fee licenses and for amendments, etc., to existing licenses, were heard. V. L. Shuter,. Putaruru, applied for an amendment to his existing licenses, to enable him to carry timber and legs to Auckland, backleading with general goods l . Applicant explained that he wished to cart logs and sawn timber .to Auckland, and wanted to back-load with equipment for the Public Works Department at Mangakino. Much of this equipment could n-ot be railed as it was too big. Objections to the granting of the amendment were made by the Railways Department (Mr. Anderson), and the Authority* reserved decision. P. H. Smale applied far two additional vehicle authorities; the extension of the area on his No. 4 license to- include Rotorua; and for the right to carry furniture in the No. 1 Authority’s area. The two additional vehicle authorities and the extension were granted, but the Authority reserved decision on the application to carry furniture. : R. C. Houlihan, of Manigakdno, aslked for an extension of his area to his goods service license to allow him to carry goods to Mangakino from Hamilton. Applicant had a Public Works Department license, and he wished this to be converted to a general goods license. Applicant stated that the present method of delivering goods, mere particularly perishable goods, to Mangakino was unsatisfactory, as far as the caterers w-ers concerned. The goods were railed to Putaruru from Hamilton, and picked up at Putaruru by a local carrier, who transported them to Mangakino. The vegetables, fruit, etc., were not fresh by the time they arrived, and there was a wastage of food. The Railways Department opposed the application. An application by C. C. Higgins, of Cambridge, for a general goods license, also to run between Hamilton and Mangakino, was heard by the Authority together with Houlihan’s application.

Applicant, it Was explained, required a license to carry foodstuffs to Mangakino from Hamilton. The caterers at Mangakino had complained to him of the unsatisfactory service they were at present receiving. A letter supporting this was received from E. C. Day, of Hamilton, who stated that they had received numerous complaints in regard to the state some of their goods arrived in at Mangakino. Mr. J. Grahame, for G. L. Martin, Ltd., carriers of the goods from the Putaruru railway station to Mangakino, stated that his clients had received only one complaint, which when investigated proved incorrect. Mr. Grahame stated that his client would object to the granting of a general goods license, but would not object to a license allowing applicant to carry perishable foodstuffs.

The Railways Department representative, who had previously opposed the application, modified his objections to the same extent. Evidence was given by C. P. Kelly, secretary of the New Zealand Workers' Union at Mangakino, as to the condition foodstuffs arrived l in at Mangakino. After considering both applications, the Authority declined Houlihan’s application, stating that it was not usual to .convert a Public Works Department license to a goods service license. Higgins was granted a license on the understanding that he could' carry perishable goods only. G. P. MeDougall, of Mangakino, applied for one additional vehicle authority for' a trailer only.—Approved. H. F. J. Hunt, of Putaruru, applied for permission to carry timber to Putaruru, back-loading mill supplies, in a 30-mile radius from the Putaruru post office.—Approved. Roy Crawford, Ltd., applied for permission to carry building materials in the Putaruru district, and Matamata, Piako, Waikato and Waipa counties. It was explained thalt the applicant was often held up on jabs for building materials, which he could obtain if he went through and got them himself. The Authority adjourned the case sine die, stating that temporary permits should cover the applicants’ needs. Applicant was advised to contact Mr. A, C. Anderson on each occasion that he required a temporary license. An application by C. C. William-

son for a vehicle authority was approved. An additional vehicle authority fOr R. H. 'Goodall was also approved. Applications were made by R. T. Garrutbeirs and P. F. Cooper to carry timber from Wiltsdown to Frankton. Mr. E. D. White, a director of the New Zealand Dairy Company, gave evidence to the effect that his company had recently purchased l a timber mill at Wiltsdown to supply the box factory at Frankton. The timber, pinus insignus, was required for milk powder cases, condensed milk cases, and cheese crates, all these products being for export. The railways representative opposed the application, pointing out the Government had recently taken over the T.T.T. line, which when in operation should be able to handle the timber. The Authority reserved his decision, and stated that he would consult the Minister in regard to the matter. H. Dewes, Paeroa, applied; for a general good's license to operate in the Taupo and Matamata counties, the Authority reserving his decision until further enquiries in regard to the amount of work available are made. Applications for taxicab licenses, to operate at Mangakino, were made by J. G. Stewart and T. Hura. ' Evidence in regard to the need fer another taxi at Mangakino was heard, the Authority reserving his decision in both cases. R.. J.. McPherson applied for a continuous goods service license from. Bart’s Siding to PuitiarUru:— Decision was reserved. The transfer of a vehicle authority from C. R. Robinson to Robinson and Sehischka was approved;
