THE BAND

(Notes by “Minim”) News Flash—the Putaturu Rugby Union announces that the Pt’Caruru Band will play on the occasion of the double> “rep” match. The news came after “Minim” went to Press last week. “Minim’ understands that this ip unprecedented in the Putaruru district, and commends the Rugby enthusiasts for their enterprise. “Minim” has assisted in “playing on” team? in other districts and wondered why not “Put.” Now it has happened—Cheers! It gave the bandsmen pleasure to accept, and although depicted in numbers—some just couldn’t be there—rendered the Quickstep “Home Again” in good style as the teams on each occasion entered the arena. “Minim” also thought that there was quite a good display of football regardless of the results. The spectators seemed to be quite appreciative of the items at half-time. “Blaze Away” reminded one of the good old days when a Circus came to town. “Bonnie Jeanie Grey” went with a swing, and the Valsette, “(Little Dark Eyes,” brought some applause, and enquiries as to when the Band would play some more. The scene changes—the crowds go home—the Park is empty. No, not quite. A few determined fellows in the dusk are marking out the course—a replica of the one to be followed at Hamilton—yes, only five weeks to go. The night passes, and in the thick fog on Sunday morning these indomitable “windjammers” are there again. The well-known voice of the Bandmaster could be heard when his person was not discernible. Well, they marched and counter-marched; they wheeled and they turned. "Minim” admits he was tired when it was all over. That turf was heavy, and “Minim” wouldn’t blame them if they commandeered Princes Street for a parade ground.

About that “Play-out”—well, Mr Conductor still has the Red Light shining in “Minim’p” direction. Until next week, Cheerio!

The enthusiasm slowly but stead-

ily increases. Those are “Minim’s” reflections after last Tuesday’s practice. Probably a little more confidence; to make the survey a true one. Sunday morning it was just more hard work, and more precision—of couroe, there were more results as compensation. “Minim” hears that there is an invitation from the Hunt Club for Saturday’s meeting—Tally Ho! The Band will be there. , Re the “Play-out”—the Green Light is showing now. A full dress rehca-sal for the Contest on the 20th along with the Band Benefit Picture. More about that next week. Cheerio.
