MATAMATA JERSEY CLUB

SUBSIDIES FOR SHOWS Matamata, Putaruru, Tokoroa - There was an attendance of fourteen members at a meeting of the Miatamata Jersey Club which was called to arrange for the prizemoney at the various shows. Mr. Lewis presided over the meeting, which was held on Wednesday night. Apologies were received from Messrs. S- J. Robinson, J. A. Ranger and R- D. Thompson. In opening, the president remarked that the credit balance was about £32 and the usual prize-money allocated was £lB 10s to Matamata, £lO to Putaruru and £5 to Tokoroa- That amounted to £33 10s, so that they would have to be careful as -to .ho,w they “cut their cloth.” In addition, there were two cups which had been won outright to be replaced. Mr- Peffers asked if the subsidy had been received from headquarters. Mr. M. E- Gould (secretary) replied that it had not. There would be about £l6 to come. The president commented that altered the position. Replying to Mr- N. M- Colson, the secretary stated that the bull sale this year brought in only £l7 6s as against £2O 10s, although more bulls were sold. On the motion of Messrs C- Hazelton and H. Hopkins it was decided that the usual amount be paid out to the Matamata A. and P- Association. Brigadier Fitness urged that Putanuru be paid the usual sum of £lO- - moved in this direction. This motion was seconded and approved. Mr. E- McK. Peffers stated that although Tokoroa had not applied he had been authorised by Mr. John Campbell to ask that the usual amount of £5 be donatedMr. C- Hazelton remarked that there was a point to be considered that in view of the finances £l6 was going to outside shows and only £lB to Matamata. Mr. N. M. Colson replied that on the other hand they accepted membership from outside members and so should encourage their shows- He seconded Mr. Peffers’ motion. This motion was approved. Calf Club Commenting on the Calf Club, Mr Gould stated that the calves this year were outstanding all round, and it was remarkable how the youngsters had reared and handled them. Mr. H- Lewis supported these comments by remarking that he had seen a lot of the calf clubs lately, and he was just beginning to realise with Mr- Peffers that they had to look after the young ones. He had been at fault himself, but realised now that they had to look after them almost from the cradle- They had, of course, not to go outside their district, but there was a wide field. He felt that they should ask the New Zealand Association to take the matter up with all , clubs throughout the Dominion. The secretary stated that a little girl who could hardly see over her calf had won the district cup in Matamata that day. Mr. Peffers said he was very pleased to hear the president’s comments. He hoped the day would come when the club would give the £5 6s cup he advocated two years ago. Mr. J. F. Vosper remarked that he had been overjoyed to hear Mr. Lewis’ comment. This was no doubt due to the fact that Mr. Lewis had acted as judge this year, and that apparently had converted the president and secretary- He hoped they would keep the spark well lit. Mr. Peffers said that Putaruru had 203 calves in their calf club. After a discussion on the class, it was decided that trophies to the value of £1 be given for the Calf Club class at the Matamata Show for the best Jersey calf, pedigree or grade. Mr. J. H. Williams said that he would like to see the class for a pair of yearling Jersey heifers left in the show even if the cup was cut a bit in value- It was almost the only club calf and was always well supported. On the motion of Messrs. Vosper and Williams it was decided'to make the cup for the pair of yearling Jersey heifers owned by a member of the Matamata Jersey Club one of £3 3s and the points cup one of £5 6s. On the motion of Messrs. W. Mears and J. F. Vosper it was decided to nominate Mr. J. C- Colson as an official judge.
