TIRAU NEWS

VISIT OF SCHOOL INSPECTOR Brief Address Opportunity was given parents of children in Tirau and the members of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union to meet Mr. Merrington, inspector of schools for the Auckland district, at the W-D.F-U. rooms on Wednesday. There was a large attendance, Mr. L. Watkins, chairman of the Tirau School Committee, accupied the chair. An apology for absence was received from Mr. Overton, chief inspector for New Zealand. Mr. Merrington gave a brief address on “Changes in Education,’’ in which he stated that the Education Board was always aiming to improve the methods which, although they were not up to the ideal standard, were a big improvement on tile methods used several years ago- He also made reference to the fine work done by the Tirau committee in erecting swimming baths and possessing a fine dental clinic. A point of co-operation between the parents and teachers is being reached, continued the speaker, and is what is aimed at as the child thus receives the full benefit. Mention was also made of the fact that no truant officer is employed in the Auckland Province. At the conclusion of his address, Mr. Merrington answered questions, the evening being brought to a close by tile serving of supper. BOWLING CLUB The Tirau Bowling Club held its opening last week. The weather was fine and the green was in good order for so early in the season. The president, Mr. S. Brownlie, welcomed the visitors and new players. He then declared the 1941-1942 season open. The president’s wife rolled up the first kitty. Afternoon tea served by the ladies in the pretty surroundings of Mr. F. Rose’s home was very much appreciated. Enjoyable and interesting games were played with visitors from the Putaruru, Hinuera and Okoroire clubs.
