TIMBER-CARTING
FROM WAIOMO BUSH. Question of Royalty. Messrs. J. Findlay and O. R. Farrar waited on the Matamata County Council at Tirau on Friday with reference to the royalty of Is 3d per 100 s.f. suggested by the council on all timber carted from the Waiomo bush at Okoroire. The deputation explained that it was principally kahikatea that would be milled. The only matai or rimu carted would be that sold to local farmers. The timber would be sold to the N.Z.C.D.C. and would be mostly carted after being seasoned. As the company allowed 75 per cent, cash payment on the ground there was no reason to rush the timber out green. The engineer explained that if they followed the old-fashioned idea they would repair the damage afterwards, and then apportion the cost. In place of this the idea behind the council’s proposal was to repair the road first with a view to putting it into good condition to stand the traffic. Cr. Judd : That would be to Mr. Findlay’s interest as well as the council’s.
The council agreed to a suggestion put forward by Mr. Farrar that a committee bet set up to confer with Mr. Findlay when he had secured his options and were ready to start. On the motion of Crs. Rollett and Judd a committee consisting of Crs. Anderson, Allen, Dee, Cox and the engineer were appointed to deal with the matter.
