DANGEROUS DRIVING.

MATAMATA COUNCIL ACTION. I General discussion on the dangerous driving of motor vehicles took place at the monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council at Tirau on Friday. Tiie Main Highways Board wrote stating that complaints had been made in regard to the manner in which certain drivers of motor vehicles passed roadmen engaged on the main highways. The letter pointed out that wide powers were given under the Motor Vehicles Act and it was

suggested that local bodies should act under section 2S of the Act, in which a driver was liable for a fine of £IOO or three months’ imprisonment who j drove his car to the danger of the i public. I The engineer stated that no comj plaints had been received from any j workmen, though complaints had been made in reference to schools. The j difficulty was in securing convictions. I The chairman stated it was neces- | sary to take the speed between two I points. Cr. Judd suggested an official letter from the council to known drivers who exceeded the limits of safety. He moved that it be a definite instruction to all council workmen to report on cases which came under their notice. Cr. Darby seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. On the motion of Crs. Dee and Wilson it was also decided to support the Auckland Automobile Association in preventing the breaking of speed recordrs between certain towns. It was decided to reply to the hoard in the above terms.
