COKE FIRES.
When properly built and looked after a coke fire is as satisfactory as a coal one. It must be laid with wood and paper or fire-lighters in the ordinary manner, and pieces of coke no larger than a tennis ball placed on the top M ion tins is burning a second shoveltill or coke should .be put on. If slack lan be procured, a shovelful, damped may lie put on this second layer of coke when it has burned through, and the fire will remain in without further attention for a. considerable time Blocks of wood burn well on a coke fire and if damp slack is used it should be put on the top of and round the blocks. When coke is used in a Kitchen range a good draught is ncce.s sary in order to ensure hot water and hot ovens, and the flues must bo kept perfectly clean and the dampers out. A coke fire is excellent for toastmaking and grilling.
