Mangatainoka School Committee.

The monthly meeting of the above was held on Saturday night. Present—Messrs Grovillo (chairman), Wiles, Jessop, Bose, Beed, Walker, and Knight. MASTER’S REPORT. Mr Wilson, head master, reported : No. on roll, 131 ; average for past quarter. 106; ditto past month, 107. We break up for our midwinter holidays to-day (4th July) and re-open on Monday, 21st July, when I Lope to see several new scholars whose names I have hoard, but wluxse faces are so far unfamiliar to me. lam pleased at the end of this our first six months of real work to be able to express myself as well satisfied upon the whole with the progress made. Those children whose parents keep them regularly to school—and there are some who never miss a day—are doing most satisfactorily. There are others, however—but I am pleased to say only a very few—who are sent intermittently, and of course these are falling behind and consequently are acquiring a distaste for school from seeing themselves hopelessly distanced by those whose parents are more self-denying and send their children regularly. If those selfish or thoughtless parents would only visit the school when their children are present, they would see how very cruelly they are behaving; they would see their children dull, while the regulars are bright, ami would then be able to appreciate the irreparable injury they are doing. If they once realised this, my reminders in the form of absence notices would not be disregarded day after day by them. But, as I have already said, parents of this class are very few ; hence their children are clearly distinguishable. The report was adopted. VISITING COMMITTEE’S REPORT.

Mr J. H. Walker reported :—Having visited the school during the month, I find several things requiring your earliest attention. 1. A bag of grass seed for school site. 2. A fow loads of gravel at hack of school. 8. More hat pegs for children. 4. That portion of fence front school to W.C. 5. That concert be arranged to get funds for prizes, Ac., for school children. 6. That a working bee be invited to dear a portion of tho ground for drilling purposes. He non-attendance of certain children, I would recommend that you take advantage of compulsory clause, as parents seeui to forget that they are keeping their children at home to their own future disadvantage. TRUANT INSPECTOR. It was decided to appoint a tniant inspector, and after some discussion Mr Jessop accepted the position. FENCE. Resolved that Mr Knight, in conformity with the master, get a close-boarded fence erected from school to W.C. OttAKN SEED. Messrs Rose and Jessop were authorised to procure grass seed ami sow the school ground. VISITINO COMMITTEE. Messrs Rose and Jessop were appointed the visiting committee for the ensuing month. OATES. Mr Knight reported that he had let the contract for gates at master’s residence, and the work would be timihed in about a week. Action endorsed, and account ordered to be paid on completion of work. SCHOOL CLKANINO. Mrs Jeffery having decided to terminate her school cleaning duties, it had therefore been considered advisable by the Chairman, secretary, and two members to call for tenders for the work. The following were received: Mrs Gleeson, 0s; Mrs Peterson, 6s; Mrs Lee, no price. The latter was considered informal, but as it appeared to be known that Mrs Lee would do the work for 6s per week, and as a majority of members felt anxious that she should get it, a vote was taken, which resulted in Mrs Lee being appointed. CONCERT. Messrs GrevilJe, Wiles, and Knight were appointed to assist the master in arranging a concert, to take place early in September. FINANCE.
