Ballance.
(From our Special Reporter.)
post orriCK. A large number of settlers met at Mr Foster’s house on Tuesday night to consider the question of a Boat Office for Bla lance. Mr Foster was voted to the chair. It was moved by Mr Crowd, seconded by Mr Heard, That this meeting protest against the action of Homo settlers in requesting that a I’ost Office be established at the south end of the Block, seeing that the township of Ballance is the most central site for all.
An animated discussion ensued, during which it was pointed out that the s noth end ha« only two bona fide settlers, w hereas there are seven settlers with families residing m the township of Ballance, and seventeen settlers within one mile of it. Further, that it was only a distance of four miles from Tahiatua to tho prop. «ed I‘ont Office at Mr Sinclair's, with a metalled road the whole distance; therefore the settlers in this locality are not inconvenienced nearly »o much as those living at and near Ballance. Seeing uko that there is a Post Office site in the to crush ip, it was contended that this was the proper place to establish one for the c»*ivenience of the Mangahao settlers. The resolution was carried unanuuou sly, and after some further business the mootmg terminated with a vote of thauka to the chair. THE BUSY HKK. It w r as a pleasant sight to see 13 aide bodied men meet on Thursday morn ing at the corner of the township, the object of tho gathering being to clear a track to connect Ballance with Tangney’s Bond, so that the settlers may have a shot ter and more convenient way of reach* ng Pabiatua than by Girdwood’s Bond. As the County Council have no funds to help the settlers, they are helping themselves. I suppose the settlors live in hope tiiat the Council will do something for them out of thirds and rates by and by. They c ertainly deserve more attention than they are getting.
