The Precious Metals.
Sydney, January 83. There is great excitement at Tenterfield over the recent development in proclaiming the goldfields of Fairfield at Drake. Silver ore has only recently been worked there, though gold lias been obtained for many years. The lode, which is now attracting much attention, is known as the white rock. Professor Cox, who lias made a very exhaustive survey, gives his opinion that there is at least a million tons of ore in sight. Ninety-three assays, made on the mine by Mr Horton ami taken from all parts of the bull;, yielded an average of lttoozs. to the ton. Professor Cox has taken many samples of ore to town with him. and tho results of his ussays will be before the public shortly. The Outcrop to the lode sends a sheer fall of 50 ft. in height, the lode running up the buck at an angle of 45 degrees for a distance of over 100 yards. Professor Cox is of opinion that the ore w ill continue of the same character to any workable depth. During the last few days a large number of claims have been pegged off and there are now about a thousand jieople on the field.
