THE ANNIVERSARY BALL. (TO THE EDITOR).
Sir. - In your last issue of the Paiiiatua Star J noticed an article written under the heading of Public Opinion, wherein the writer, a certain Mr Schoitisclie, alter expatiating at sonic length on the very pleasant manner in which the residents of Bahiat'ia enjoyed themselves at tho Anniversary Ball, proceeds to pass some very disparaging remarks on another portion of the community, who got up a private dance in order to celebrate Anniversary Day. This I maintain they had a perfect right to do, as there were a few at the ball in the auction room not very select — unfit, perhaps 1 should say, to associate with any respectable person. If Mr Schottische enjoyed himself so exceedingly well, which by tho way I have reason to doubt, why did he endeavor to obstruct other people's enjoyment *? I should say from a disinterested point of view that the feeling of opposition ran high, and that his unprecedented action was instigated by petty spite. Mr Schottischo insinuated that those at the auction room were glad to be rid of our company. In doing so he showed very bad taste by making such a set out about the affair. Doubtless they would have liked the company very well and the five bob too. Five bob friendship is not worth much. Mr Schottische. it is well to know you. As for the public opinion of the private dancers 1 may sav, emulating from those it does, it makes very little impression. Tho outcome of the whole affair has been to create a fooling of dissension and to divide the community into two classes. This. Mr Editor, is a fact to be deplored, and the blame I emphatically say rests with Schottische. I would advise him not to rush into print again till he has given thu matter full consideration. — I am. Ac., Retort.
