Masterton and Woodville Candidates.

In an article on the merits and demerits of the whole of the candidates in the Wellington provincial district, the Post thus refers to those contesting the Masterton and Woodville seats :—F’urther on there is a triangular duel, and it is said that Mr. Beethain will probably, owing to Mr Hawkins standing, be beaten for Mastorton by Mr Hogg, an out and out Ministerialist. The electors will probably soon have reason to regret their choice if this is so, for while Mr Beetham is by no means an ideal representative, he has proved himself a fairly respectable and useful one. Mr Hogg is not a desirable type of representative, or likely to prove of much real use if he should get into Parliament. His views on Protection should also serve to deprive him of the confidence of any country constituency which understands its own best interests. Mr Hawkins has no chance of success, and his retirement iu favor of Mr Beetham would be tlie most practical proof lie could give of the sincerity of the political faith he professes. 11l Woodville there are also three candidates, hut it is said that Mr McCardle, who will command most of the votes, will he crushed by the Hawke’s Bay electors. We are inclined to regrot this, because although perhaps not very highly qualified for public life, Mr McCardle is au honest, straightforward man, and is undoubtedly superior to Mr Smith, who is opposing him on the same ticket. Mr Horace Baker's candidature i 9 objectionable, because he is a man with a personal grievance, an ex-Civil servant dissatisfied with the way he has been treated, and still longing after the Eden from which he has been excluded. Men with a grievance are even worse iu Parliament than men with a fad. Mr Baker is said to have the best chance of success, but the result is very doubtful.
