TOWN BOARD BY-ELECTION.

A by-election for tho return of one member of the Havelock Town Board, to fill the vacancy caused by the retirement of Mr E. H. Smitn, will be held to-morrow (Wednesday). Two candidates —Messrs J. R. Buncombe, and Arthur B. Reade have been nominated, and a close contest may bo expected. Every ratepayer, including those who pay water and gas rates, arc entitled to vote, providing he or she has been resident within the Town Board ’district for the previous three months or over. We understand that tho husband and wife are both eligible to vote. The polling booth will be situated at the Board's office, and will be open between the hours of 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., and the result will probably be known within half an hour of closing. The views of the candidates are probably well known, but it might be mentioned that Mr Reade is strongly opposed to any temporary schemes, either in connection with lighting or otherwise. He is a believer in solid and permanent work that will stand and serve for all time.

Mr Buncombe is also a strong advocate for progress, and in connection with the lighting scheme, would support the £I9OO project as one giving promise of filling the immediate needs of the town, without the risk of overburdening the ratepayers.
