“THE PRETENDERS.”

A “Metro” picture drama needs little commendation, but “The Pretenders,” which will be produced at the Town Hall next Saturday, is ‘a story that cannot fail to appeal to all. “The Pretenders” marks the first appearance of Emmy Wehlen, the favourite little Viennese star, in a Metro'production since “Her Reckoning, or Tables Turned,” which was screened in Havelock a few weeks ago. The story of “The pretenders” presents a viyid picture of the simple life in a Middle West town before the family of Pettingills become wealthy, and after they come to live in a Fifth Avenue mansion, with a country house in the Adirondacks, An interesting glimpse of English customs is also given in the situations, where a real Earl and a counterfeit Earl figure. Miss Wehlen, who is counted one of the best dressed women of the stage or screen, wears many wonderful gowns in “The Pretenders.” In a woxd, this Metro feature has every requisite found in the best class of screen productions. Miss Wehlen speaks several languages, and excels in horse-back riding, motoring and outdoor sports. She has been seen on the Metro programme in other plays, but the “Pretenders” is by far the best feature in which she has appeared. Amongst the supporting items on this P r °Sramme is a ‘Drew’ comedy entitled A Model Cook.” An excellent number of the new scenic topicals, views in and around Cape Cod., and the famous fishing villages show many quaint people, house customs in an extremely quaint country. A little bit of the old world tucked away from the busy rush of the new. Another film shows the splendid and up-to-date methods of a famous girls’ Training School, in which the_ cult of the open-air is taught. A most interesting, and, at the same time, entertaining picture.
