“Every person who exorcises economy becomes a producer and adds to the world’s supply.’’ Put it in your cruet—SHARLAND ’S MALT VINEGAR. Mellow and mature. Most wholesome and most palatable Vinegar in New Zealand. In bulk and bottle. All grocers.

TO THE RATEPAYERS. IN respectfully placing myself in your hands as a candidate for the vacant seat on the Town Board, I would like to state that I am in favour of a steady, progressive policy for the further improvement of our town. The present lightless condition of the town should be remedied as soon as possible, as a town that is plunged into darkness as soon as the sun goes down cannot progress. I am therefore in favour of the cheaper electric light scheme proposed, providing ail doubt is removed that it will give the results claimed for it, and for the reason that it can be quickly installed. This temporary plant could then be extended as the demand for the current increased. I believe in feeling one’s way first before plunging into a heavy expenditure that may perhaps cripple the town instead of benefiting it. If elected it will be my aim to watch your interests in all matters that come before the Board for consideration, and while favouring any proposal for the betterment of the town that comes within the scope of the Board’s present income, will oppose any expenditure that, in my opinion, will necessitate the striking of a higher rate. I am, yours respectfully, JOHN R. BUNCOMBE,

TO THE RATEPAYERS. I OFFER myself as a candidate for the forthcoming bye-election. It will be my earnest endeavour to get the town into a presentable state, instead of having it in the state it is today. For instance, the building up and tarring of the footpaths should be gone on with. This work was started nine months ago when certain portions of the town were alloted work. Some of this work was finished and the rest was allowed to stop. Now, this is where the waste of our rates comes in—to have the work half completed with the material on the ground. When this • work is proceeded* with it will mean that all the labour that has been done on this work will have to be done over again—which spells absolute waste. The lighting of the streets will have'to be very carefully gone into. lam right up against any temporary scheme. The scheme I would support is on this basis. That the Board invite tenders for competitive schemes for lighting the town, the successful tenderer to be paid at the rate of one per cent, per hundred pounds, the maximum price to be £2500. Taking this price as a basis to work on, the town would have a good up-to-date plant and within the scope of the Board, for this reason: Take 70 consumers (which will include the street lights) at an average of £4 per year will give £280; take out of this £125 for interest and sinking fund and a balance of £155 is left for working expences and deterioration. The Cemetery should have better supervision than it gets —the credit balance of about £3OO warrants it and it should have attention apart from anything else. The Town Hall charges need revising, and put on a payable basis, and finally all the property belonging to the Board should be put on a payable basis. Take for instance the punt that is used for carting gravel. Since it was built it has been used far more by outsiders than by the Board, and the return from it, I believe, is nothing to the cost of the up-keep. Should you give me the honour by electing me as a member of the Board, it will be my earnest endeavour to study your interests and conserve the welfare of the town. Thanking you in anticipation, I am, etc., A. SHADE.
