HAVELOCK TOWN BOARD.

ELECTION OF MEMBER. The Returning Officer (Mr C. A’Court Opic) gives notice that Messrs John R. Buncombe, and Arthur B. Reade have been nominated to fill the vacancy on the Town Board caused by the retirement of Mr E. H. Smith.

The poll of electors will ,be taken next Wednesday at the Board’s office, and the booth will be open from 9 a.m. to G p.m. Both candidates are well known business men and considerable interest is being taken in the election, and the contest is expected to be a close one. A second vacancy having occurred by the retirement of Mr W. H. Orsman, a second election will be . necessary. Nominations for this seat close at noon on Saturday, 30th inst., and in the event of more than one candidate being nominated a poll of electors will bo taken on Monday, Bth April, of which due notice will be given.

The views of both candidates, which mainly hinge on what is at present the burning question in the town—the electric lighting scheme—will be found in our advertising columns.

Mr Reade is an old resident of the district, and knows the requirements of the town to his finger tips. Frpm the outset ho has taken a keen interest in the proposed lighting scheme, and pledges himself to support the safe though more expensive scheme involving the erection of a second dam above the present one, for the reason that it will bo more satisfactory and efficient from the start, and will not endanger or interfere with the water for domestic purposes. He wisely limits the expenditure within a safe margin. The lighting scheme is a!eo the “main plank” on which Mr Buncombe stands, with the essential difference that he favours the scheme that his opponent opposes. Mr Buncombe supports the £I9OO scheme —for which the ratepayers will soon be asked the sanction the raising of a loan —because it can be more quickly installed, and the price is not beyond the resources of the town.
