Thursday, The efforts of the local branch of the Patriotic Society in connection with the Red Triangle Day appeal were a decided success. A bazaar and gift auction was held in- Victoria Hall on Saturday, the ‘result of which far exceeded the expectations of the committee, who had aimed at raising about £IOO. The amount taken is over £l9O with several amounts yet tc come in which will bring the total to at least £2OO. It is understood that about £SO of this amount is earmarked for the Soldiers' Parcel Fund, leaving a balance of £l5O available for the Y.M.C.A. The donations of produce, meat! drapery, etc., were on a generous scale, and some doubt was expressed early in the day as to whether it would all be disposed of. Business during the evening was brisk, every article being disposed of by closing time. A handsome wedding cake of 5 tiers, presented by the Misses Dalton, was raffled for, the amount realised being £l3 7s. Mr P. Smart proved to be the winner and generously donated the cake to be sold by auction, the result being the addition of £3O 2s, the cake being sold and resold bringing the total amount realised up to £43 9s. Messrs C. F. Hart, N. Ward, and J. Jones did good business in the meat stall during the afternoon, the principal draw being a fine bullock presented by the Bown Estate. The takings were £lB 7s 7d. The drapery stall in charge of Mrs Cloughley and Miss Healy netted £lB 3s Id.

Mrs Rush and Mr G. Young had a busy time in the produce stall, £6 16 8d being the amount realised. The competitions (realising £4l 18s) were in the capable hands of Mr and Mrs Field. Mr E. F, Healy, as auctioneer, contributed largely to the success of the undertaking. The receipts from another small helper deserving of mention was Master J. W. Perry, of Havelock , aged 34 years, who collected £2 12s during the afternoon.
