ELECTRIC LIGHT FOR HAVELOCK.

SCHEME APPROVED BY GOVERNMENT ENGINEER.

Mr E. Parry, chief electrical engineer of the Public Works Department, has now formally approved of the scheme submitted by Mr Barnes for the lighting of the town, and the draft license has now been received by the Town Clerk. Everything is now in readiness apparently for the Town Board to go ahead with the necessary preliminaries for the financing of the work of installation.

The scheme approved consists of the erection of a temporary generating station at the foot of Inglis street (site of present acetylene generator house) with an electric generator driven by means of a pelton wheel which will obtain its supply of water from the present town water supply pipe. It is the intention to supercede this plant later by another plant located a short distance above the present dam, which will be supplied by means of a pipe line from a second dam to be erected about 300 feet above the present one.

Mr Parry states that the scheme appears to him to be a very satisfactory one as it will enable the Board to satisfy the immediate lighting requirements of the town at a minimum of ex- ] penditure, and will further provide for future requirements ns soon as the capacity of the temporary plant is exhausted.

A point worth noting, and one which should inspire confidence in the ratepayers, is that a clause in the draft ; license provides that: “The Govern- j ment Inspecting Engineer, both during [ and after the construction of the works, < shall have free access and liberty at 1 any time to inspect the same so as to i ensure that the provisions of this license are given due effect to.”
