POLICE COURT.
A typical specimen of the vagrant class, who wander about the Dominion in a haphazard sort of fashion, came up before Mr W. H. Smith, J.P-, at local Police Court yesterday. His name was Alexander Martin, but he had a fairly long string of aliases, and a record of no less than 50 previous convictions, embracing charges of theft, drunkenness, obscene language, etc. The present charge was one of drunkenness in the streets of Havelock on Saturday last, but as six months had expired since his previous conviction for this offence, ho was treated as a first offender, convicted and discharged. Accused promised to leave the town and get work. William Macalister, who was arrested by Constable Douglas on Sunday last on a charge of drunkenness and resisting the police, was convicted and discharged on the charge of drunkenness, and fined £2 for resisting, or in default one month in Picton gaol. Accused had four previous convictions against him.
