NOTES FROM CANVASTOWN.

Monday.

The annual meeting of the Literary and Debating Society was held in the Debating Hall on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance of members and the general public. The bal-ance-sheet of the Society showed a credit balance of £4 7s 2d, and the library account a credit balance of £lO Iks lid. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr T. A. Cloughley (re-elect-ed); vice-president, Mr J. Miller; secretary, Mr G. Young (re-elected). There wore ten nominations for the six positions on the committee, Messrs Peters, Dickinson, Geary, juur., Read, Mrs Dickenson, and Miss Morrison being elected. After the business of the meeting had been disposed of an enjoyable musical programme was given, the first item being an overture by Miss Eileen Morrison. Songs were given by Mcsdames Field and Ball, and Miss Wadsworth; pianoforte solo by Miss Myra Rush; violin solo by Mr Miller. Mr Holland gave some interesting camp stories, and two songs, well rendered, were given by the senior school girls. Supper was handed round-by the ladies. The Dairy Factory has ceased operations for the season," having closed down on the 15th inst. The season, from a dairying point of view, has been rather disappointing. The prospects at the commencement were exceptionally good,but unfortunately these were completely upset by the flood in November, and still further loss was occasioned by the dry spell which followed. It is understood that the output of cheese will be on an average with previous years, but had normal conditions prevailed throughout the season the result would have been a considerable increase. Owing to the absence of frosts feed is still growing well, and stock should winter much better than was thought would be the case some time baclft ;
