“Nuts” write many love-letters, but these nuts are of the human kind, and are spelt usually “tout.” But at least on one accasion a Brazil nut has become the means of amatory correspondence. One of these real nuts was .used a young planter in South America, much as a Christmas cracker is used by Tom Smith for the concealment of a “motto” or “sentiment,” to be read out at dinner.

Now this young lady, who was only seventeen, had not counted on cold storage, and she confesses that she had three offers of marriage in £he meantime from young fellows who “happened along.” Yet, strangely enough, she gave them the go-by, and now so fully appreciates the qualities of the young man of New London, Connecticut, who read the message and responded, that, in her own words, she is ‘‘glad she gave Cupid a chanca ”
