, AN INCREASE'IN WAGES. The conference between the New Zealand Federated Seamen’s Union and the steamship owners was brought to a close last week, when a settlement on all the points was amicably arrived ,at. According to the official statement handed to the press the principles established by Mr Justice Higgins in the Federal Arbitration Court in the Australian seamen’s award have'been largely endorsed. , ~ * An increase in wages of £l> per. month above the'rates ruling in November last has'been granted. The working conditions have been; very considerably amended, including the recognition‘of an eight hours day and preference to Unionists. < THE AUSTRALIAN AWARD. Hours of labour in port for seamen shall not be more than eight per day; hours of labour in > port for seamen shall ■be between 7 a.m,and 5 p.m„ except that on days, of departure from a port the master may set Watches at any time for stokehold men; hours Of labour at sea for stokehold men shall not be more than , eight in a' day; after June 30th,. 1912, the hour of labour for deck hands snallnot be more than eight in a day; on days of arrival at, or departure from, a port, any watches or times of duly at sea are to be reckoned as hours in port; but in cases where a ship arrives in port and departs therefrom on the same day the ship may, at the option of the master, be treated as ’ at sea all day, /
