The Hon. C. H. Mills. M.L.C. wil arrive in Have ook this morning. Mr Fred. Oouper has bean appointed manager and editor of the Pelorus Guardian, and will arrive in Havelock to-day., A visitor to Havelock for several days last week was Mr W. J. Scott, editor and part proprietor of the “ East Coast Guardian,' ’ Opotiki. Mr Scott was charmed with'the scenic beauties ot the locality. Great regret was expressed in Havelock when the news arrived that Mr W, Armstrong, Commissioner of Crown Lands in i New Plymouth, had died suddenly on Saturday. Mr Armstrong was for several years secretary to, the Marlborough Land , Board, and made many friends in this district. I At a large gathering of members of the Takoreke Hockey and Tennis Club, yesterday, Miss Winnie Warner, the secretary,! presented to Mrs Taylor a handsome silver hot-water jug as a memento of Mrs and Mr Taylor’s connection with the Club. Miss Warner made a very nice little speech, and Mr Taylor acknowledged the gift. One of the pioneers of the Rai Valley, Mr Charles Turner, died In Nelson on Tuesday last, at the age of 73 years. He took up land in the 60’a near Mr John Bown’s present holding beyond Canvastown, later moving to the Rai, and a few years ago shifting to Seabrigbt Farm, Whangamoa. He was a splendid type of the brave old pioneers who blazed the trail for the present settlers. Mr A. P- Seymour was a visitor to Havelock on Saturday. Though he is, in his Both year, Mr Seymour is still as. active as many men of 50, and is at the present time engaged in surveying the Maori Reserve beyond Canvastown, The present generation of Marlborough, residents could gain a great deal of interesting information during a chat with Mr Seymour, who was in the thick of the political fight from iB6O to 1890. The unpleasant episode in India, in which a prominent Native turned his back upon Royalty, recalls an episode in tjie life of the late Mr R, J. Seddon,' which the general public may have forgotten. In the year 1898 Mr Seddon accompanied Lord Rapfucly, then Governor of the dominion, on a visit to Hastings. The Mayor and Councillors were assembled at the railway station to extend a civic welcome to the Vice-Regal party. His Excellency shook hands with each of the Councillors in turn. The Prime Minister was doing likewise, but when be came to Or Murdoch, i that gentleman deliberately turned his hack upon Mr Seddon. The insult was resented by the local press, and the public-showed its disgust by relegating Mr Murdoch to obscurity on . the first opportunity, Mr Seddon, though he laughed at the incident, was plainly affected at the insult offered the Crown.
