A FOREWORD ON FASHION.

The illustrations in this column are from the pen of one of the best dress designers of the present day, and shows at a glance the two styles 1 now prevailing. The firgt, point to be noticed in the pretty dress on the figure seated in the chair is the high pointed belt, and the next thing is the new bell sleeve. These two things are the chief characteristics of this very smart frock.’ The skirt, it will be noticed, has a tight plain

band round the edge, but it is not so very tight as those which have been worn. , The neck is cut out in a square'shaped yoke filled in with lace and there is no collar-band, for, the new frocks, like last year’s,''are not to show a high-cut neck, ’ibis frock is made in cashmere of the shade known as “parchment,” and the hand of sating round the edge of the skirt is in the safiie shade, of a slightly

darker tint. The lace at the neck is ecru, and the little bands which outline the yoke are made of galon worked with coloured threads. The second figure shows a very good design, for the making up of one of the new stripe materials combined with \ 1 lace. The unierdress is plain, and the tunic has lace put on in a broad flat band. There are tight lace ah- • dersleeves, and the yoke at the neck is cut out in a circle..,-This prettygown is made of blue -vicuna cloth, and the lace is of the same colour. All applied ■ trimmings.' o^' frocks should match as far as possible the shade of the material on which they are placed, and therefore we see in this frock the lace-dyed to match the colour of the material.
