CARLUKE NEWS.

[Prom our Correspondent!. The clerk of the weather has now favoured us with a few fine afternoons, which are very much appreciated by all. fn spite of this, however, rain continues to fall in heavy showers nearly every night, so that the supply of mud is not diminishing. The days are now getting longer, so that we hope to have better times soon. Much excitement has been caused by the supposed visitation of the airship. Several stirring tales of the “strange lights” have been told here, and many believe that the rnuch-talked-of visitor has actually passed over Carluke. It is regarded as very fashionable to have seen the wonderful sight, though it is just probable that certain stars which are very bright at present may account for the lights which are supposed to accompany this airship. The local sawmill stopped work on Friday at noon, to enable a large number of the hands to get through to Blenheim to see the boxing contests. We are pleased to be able to report that a Carluke resident, Mr H. Spear, was the winner of the principal bout. We extend to him our congratulations od his success. Mr Bryant preached to a fairly large congregation yesterday. The afternoon was beautifully fine. The Ladies’ Sewing Guild are now working very hard, as they hope to hold a sale of work in November. They intend meeting once a week, in a different house each week, and hope to do a great deal of work before the.abovementioned date. The proceeds are to go towards the local church funds,

The Hockey Club are practising steadily, and are looking forward to having a match with the Havelock team. The season is now nearing the end, so that soon the game will be laid aside and fresh pleasures take its place.
