CANVASTOWN V. RAI. This match, as stated in our last issue, was won by Oanvastown by 8 points to nil. As a compliment to Mr A. W. Dillon, who will shortly leave the district, that gentleman was asked to kick-off for the Rai, and he sent the oval well down the field. Rai played with the wind and sun in their faces. From a line-out N. Simonsen got the ball and made a fine run to within a few yards of the Rai line. Row relieved with a kick to half-way, where Spear got possession and streaked for the Rai goal; he was collared on the line, and from the subsequent scrum Charley Nelson scrambled over and scored. Reade’s kick went wide. After the kick-off the reds (Canvastown) again attacked strongly, but the collaring of D. Murray and Keller was too good to allow of a score being made. _ A free kick to the yellows relieved the pressure. Auckram got the ball and, making a good run, took the play well into the reds’ 25, where it remained for some time, the yellows pressing hotly. At last Spear got away with the ball at his feet, and took play past the centre. From a line-out the ball was passed to Spear, and that player by a fine dodgy run beat all the yellow backs and scored between the posts. Reade placed a good goal. A series of line-outs followed, W. Grace doing good work. Reade then had a shot at goal, the ball going just outside the posts, and Rai forced. The reds kept on attacking, but good kicking by Row and Clarke saved the situation. A fine exhibition of passing between Spear, Reade, Fuller, and Godfrey ended in the latter being pushed into touch at the corner flag. Rai had to force twice in the next few minutes. Halftime was called with the score Oanvastown ... ... 8 Rai ... ... ... 0 On resuming play the yellows swept down the field with the ball at their feet, and a force-down resulted. They continued the attack, but could not get through the defence of the opposing backs. A lot of forward play then followed, W. Grace and Coleman showing up well. D. Murray hero made a fine run, but was collared near the line. Play then shifted to the yellows’ 25, and from a line-out Bert Hughes got over, but the try was disallowed. The ball was travelling up and down the field at a great rate, and once Spear dribbled it right up to the line, but a free kick relieved the pressure. Reade soon after got over the line, but the try was not allowed and a free kick given against him for holding the ball. The game ended without further score,

Of the Oanvastown backs Spear played best, though N. Simonseij, Reade, and Puller all did good work; Bert Hughes and Godfrey were the pick of the forwards. For the Rai D. Murray played his usual good game, and Auckram played well at times, W. Grace was the best forward on the ground.

11l view of the first match for the premiership of North Marlborough, which will be played on Brownlee Park to-morrow, it will not be out of place to urge upon players that the game should be played for its own sake. To the younger players we would say “ Let your Captain do any talking that is necessary, and never appeal direct to the iWeree.” Tomorrow both sides will need all their wits and cleverness, without wasting them on frivolous protests, Spectators must also remember that the game is not rendered more pleasant by continuous jibing yells at the players, as was the case on several occasions last year. A really good game ought to result. The ball will be kicked off at 8 o’clock sharp. The Buffer Rugby Union have written challenging the representatives of Marlborough for the Seddon Shield. It was resolved that the challenge be accepted and the match be played 'oa the 20th July, in Blenheim. Further contributions towards the Guabdian Jisfc of subscriptions for the championship caps have been received from the following Messrs J. Toms. A. Wells, P. Fields (Nelson), Rev. A, Staoe, Messrs J. W. Hughes, W. Hunter, E. Scott, H. J. Smith, J. Greaves, E. Ounniffe, and W, Slater,
