A 100-STOREY BUILDING.

The tallest "sky-seraper"' in New York will soon be dwarfed by the erection of a giant of 50 storeys or more, and an eminent arahite'et and builder prophesies that a 1-00-storey building is a probability of the near future.

The dream of Edward Bellamy, in his "Looking Backward," of a mammoth building towering into the clouds, and containing within itself all the activities of a great city, is likely to come true. "Some day it will come," said the architect referred to. "Our civilization is progressing wonderfully, and building is one of the chief factors of civilization. In New York we must keep on building, and wc must build upward. We may not be ready for the 100-storey building yet, but the larger and higher building's we are certain to have. Thero are a hundred things that come in as important factors in the consideration of the now type of big building. The elevator service, for instance. The weight of a cabla for a 28-storey building is something enormous, and if we are to build much higher wo must find some new method of perpendicular transportation, "In the 100-story building, instead of the old-stylo elevators now in use it will no doubt, be equipped with pneumatic tube conveyances, and we shall bo shot upward with great rapidity. may then have transfer points at each twentieth floor, at which there will be some particular department. Maybe on the twentieth floor we shall have the general market on the fortieth floor theatres, on the sixtieth the shopping district, and so on ; for yo.nr big building of the future will be a city in itself.."-
