LINKWATER SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

THE FIRST ELECTION. (From our own Correspondent). A meeting of householders was held at the Institute, Mahakipawa, at 3 nm. on Saturday last. This hour was a very inconvenient one for the settlers, and if the meeting had been held in the morning there would have been a much larger attendance. As it was, twenty householders put in an appearance. Mr John Duncan was voted to the chair. Mr D. Halketfc addressed the gathering and said it was illegal to constitute a new district, without fully advertising the same, before the commencement of the year. He also contended that the old Committee held office till 31st March, The Chairman referred to several clauses of the Education Act, and then asked Mr Halketfc if he still wished to protest. Mr Halketfc: “ I don’t think it is any good.” The Chairman then read out the names of six candidates who had been duly nominated, but as seven members were required three other names were proposed. A ballot was therefore taken, with the following result W. Coleman 17 J. W. Bryant 12 R. Barker 16 F. Coombe n H. T, Palmer 15 G. Cavvte io C. Neal 14 W, Voyce 10 B, Thompson 13 The Chairman then declared the ( first seven to be duly elected, and the householders’ meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the chair. A meeting of the newly-elected Committee was at once held, and Mr R. Barker was appointed Chairman. It was resolved that the Committee meet on the last Thursday in each month.
