Sly Grog-selling.

Dunedin, July 25. At the Police Court, to-day, Alexander Leckie, a small storekeeper in Kensington, was fined £25, with £$ 18s costs, for selling liquor without a license. A man was seen to enter the store, and on his coming out a Constable found he bad two bottles of beer on him. The Police raided the place, but failed to find any liquor. The man with the beer said he bought it at Leckie’s, but on cross-examination was not clear on the point, as ho* said he was muddled, The defendant denied having sold the beer, or having any in the place, New Dredging’ Area. Gore, July 25. A new development in the dredging industry of this district has taken place at Waiaia, A syndicate, after surface prospecting, has secured options over a very large area of agricultural land on the Wairaea Plains, in the vicinity of Riversdale, not previously suspected of any payable auriferous ground within many miles of the district referred to. If the final tests by boring confirm the expectations of the syndicate it is understood that several dredges will be placed in commission to work the new field. Football. TARANAKI V. WANGANUI. Wanganui, July 24, The representative match, Taranaki v. Wanganui, resulted in a victory for the former by nineteen points to eight. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance. The result is hardly a true criterion of the merits of the teams. The Taranaki backs played with great brilliance, and scored most of the points. Hunter, Cameron, F. Mynott, and Abbott played splendidly. The Wanganui forwards played a great game, but their backs were only fair, Abbott (two), Cameron (two), and Crowley (one), scored tries for Taranaki, and three were converted. Meuli and Mitchel scored tries for Wanganui, Southcombe converting one. Fatal Accident. Ashburton, July 25. While working in a shingle pit at Wakanui to-day, James Dwyer was killed through the sides of the pit caving in, and the fall of debris burying him. A rescue party were quicklv at work, but though only a quarter of an hour elapsed before the shingle was cleared away life was extinct when the man was disinterred,
