SHOOTING FATALITY.

Wellington, June 12. A very sad fatality occurred here yesterday. Herbert Palmer, aged 27, a clerk in the General Post Office, was out pigeonshooting, when his gun accidentally discharged, blowing a hole right through his left thigh, from which he bled to death, Deceased was well-known in athletic and boating circles. THE MIDLAND RAILWAY. Christchurch, June 12. Mr Robert Wilson, the engineer-in-chief and general manager of the Midland Railway Company, states that the telegram from Wellington, that “the manager and other officers of the Midland Railway Company have resigned their positions and taken service under the Government ” is not correct. Only the working railway staff and linemen have, with his consent, joined the Government service.

Christchurch, June 12. The Avon Road Board has voted £IOO to provide work for the unemployed, on condition that the sum is subsidised by the Government.
