Prospecting.
Spasmodic efforts have continually been made during many years to initiate a system of prospecting ground in this district known to be auriferous, but the difficulty is to awake sufficient interest and collect the necessary sinews of war. Two years ago an association was started in Havelock, and the promoters gave a lot of time and this paper a lot of printing, for we have nob yet been paid for advertising the prospectus, trying to get something workable, as everyone was fully convinced that large deposits of minerals only wanted systematic searching for to be unearthed. Recently another association has been formed at Cullensville, but we have not yet heard with what success. We are sorry to hear that owing to the stoppage of crushing at the Ravenscliff mine the Mines Department have withdrawn the £l5O promised to the member for the district for opening out the remainder and completing a substantial track between Cullensville and Waikakaho. It is the want of such a reasonable convenience that prevents many miners from prospecting such heavy bush country, and we have no doubt Mr Mills will not let the item get out of the socket without a strong remonstrance.'
