Motueka Wharf.

We learn there is considerable danger of the harbour at Motueka being partially filled up, and very probably destroyed, through part of the sand-bank, which forms the harbour, being washed away; thus giving another outlet for the river, which lessens the scouring power and allows the sand to accumulate to such an extent that, if not checked quickly, the port will soon become useless. The County Council has applied to the Marine Department for an engineer to report on the damage done and the best means to remedy the evil;, but ,the Minister seems to think' that, as the Council has charge of the wharf, they should employ an engineer,.' Now, as the revenue derived is only about sufficient to pay interest on money raised for construction, wharfinger’s salary, &c., and necessary repairs to wharf and buildings they have no funds to meet such an emergency. This harbour is a most important outlet for a large quantity of produce, and if silted up would simply mean ruin to the many farmers in the district. When we recollect the great facilities accorded to other settlers throughout the colony by means of railway transit, for which all who do not receive any benefit are taxed alike, we think the Marine Department should provide not only an engineer competent to deal with the case but also find the necessary funds to repair the harbour and keep it suitable for small steamers to navigate with safety.
