ROAD BOARD.

We are indebted to our local contemporary for the following :— A meeting of the Roarl Board was held on Tuesday, the 7th inst. Messrs. Poynter, King, Hall, and Parsons being present. The following business was transacted :—

The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, it was resolved that the Board should meet on Monday, instead of Tuesday, for the future. A letter was produced from the Acting Provincial Treasurer, stating that the sum of £554 had been allotted to the district for the current year, and had been deposited in the Bank to the credit of the Board. A letter was also placed on the table, from His Honor the Superintendent, suggesting that an agent should be appointed in Auckland, who would select a certain number of eligible immigrants for this district, on their arrival in the province, and, after due discussion, it was resolved to depute Mr. W. Smith to act in that capacity. Mr. Helyar waited on the Board requesting permission to alter the line of road, and also that a drain might be laid off on the road between sections Nos. 7 and 8, to be kept clean by the Board on his completing the same. These requests were acceded to. A letter from Messrs. Strong and Bryant was then read, in which they proposed to lease the reserve opposite sections 127 and 128, with the view of converting it into a species of ornamental nursery and recreation ground, which would be thrown open to the public. After some discussion it was resolved that this proposition be recommended by the Board to the Auckland authorities. The following resolutions were also carried : That a cutting should be made on the road to the Repongaere. That tenders be called for cart i.ig, screening, and spreading metal on the main road, the screen to be provided by the Board, and that the portion newly formed should be divided into three sections for the purpose of expediting the work. That the road extending from Higgins’ Hotel to the culvert at Espie’s corner should be formed afresh, and that about two chains of the Matawhero road be reformed, and properly metalled. It was likwise resolved that the earth from the drains be spread in the centre of the church road, Matawhero. Mr. Kilcolly’s tender for work Mill road, at 16s per chain was and several progress payments on account of contracts, &C., were passed.
