Tardy Justice.
An extraordinary instance of the tardy steps of justice overtaking a culprit after many years has just transpired at Sydney. In July, 1873, a seaman named Frederick Maddoc-ks ran away with a schooner called the Jessie, from Apia, and left the owner on shore amongst the ferocious natives. Some months afterwards the owner escaped from the natives and succeeded in gettingon board a friendly ship which conveyed him to Auckland. Here he found that Maddncks had sold the schooner, and cleared with the proceeds. Nothing whatever was heard of the culprit for many years until the owner was walking through the streets of Sydney when he recognised the face of his piratical robber seated on the box of a cab. The transference from the vehicle to a jail cell was soon effected, and after due trial the offender was sentenced on the 3rd instant to 10 years penal servitude.
