The Armstrong Abduction Case.
A HEAVY SENTENCE. (OWN CORRESPONDENT.) London, Nov. 10. Sentence was passed yesterday on the several prisoners found guilty of abduction or conspiracy in connection with the Lily Armstrong case. Mr Stead, the editor of the Pall Mall Gazette, who was found guilty of abduction, was sentenced to three years imprisonment, while Mr Jacques sub-editor of the same journal, who was found guilty of conspiracy, received a sentence of one year’s imprisonment. Mrs Rebecca Jarrett and Madame Morey were each sentenced to six months’ imprisonment; in the latter cases with hard labor. The two women were found guilty of indecent assault by examing the girl. In passing sentence the Judge censured Mr Stead for distorting facts and publishing filthy particulars, thereby disgracing journalism. The entire Press endorse the verdict, and rejoice at the removal of what they term a national stain. The fund raised by the sympathisers of Mr Stead, for his defence, reached £5OOO.
