Napier, Friday. Henry Nairn, late sheepfarmer at Wairoa, and now out of occupation, has filed a petition to be adjudged a bankrupt.
Wellington, Friday. The body of a newly born infant was found in the harbor on Wednesday night. The body was headless. A fire broke out this morning in the Empire Buildings. The building was completely gutted. The downstair portion of the building was occupied by Messrs Dempsey, Tailor, Elliott', bootmaker, and Hili', Hatter. The upstair portion consisted of offices. The fire commenced in Dempseys, and the origin still remains a mystery. At the enquiry, held yesterday, into the wreck of the Edwin Bassett, the Captain stated that feeling unwell, he kept the course of steamers, with a view of getting a passage back by some steamer. He admitted having hugged the shore too close. The Court suspended his certificate for three months, and ordered him to pay the costs 48. Only two tenders have been received for the ’Frisco mail contract, but no particulars have as yet been disclosed.
Auckland, Friday. George Augustus Sala delivered a lecture here on Wedesday night on the " Russin Empire.” He left yesterday for Wellington.
Christchurch, Friday. Two girls escaped from Burnham Industrial School some days ago and were wandering about die port hills were captured by the Lyttleton police last night. Wanganui, Friday. _ Word has been received here from Kihikihi that Wilkinson, native agent, stopped the Wanganui prospectors from going to Tuhua, and persuaded the natives to do the same with the I'hames men. Wilkinson sars the Wanganui party are not practical miners. ‘ The Miners’ Prospecting Association here has communicated with the Government complaining of Wilkinson’s interference and stating lhat both men are well known to be practical and experienced ininers.
