The blustering attitude which the Opposition has of late assumed seems again to be dying out, and things are once more assuming their normal state, although the Want of Confidence motion is still held as a rod in terrorem over the Ministerial back, to be applied whenever occasion requires. The truth is that no leader can be found who has the hardihood to tackle the enormous difficulties which the present Government have to contend against; and although it has become the fashion to sneer at and condemn eveiw Ministerial move which is made, it is more than questionable whether any other combination whatever could, under the present condition of things and with the

available material at hand, possibly hope to do better and to untangle the knotty web of perplexing difficulties, debt and disorder which the Atkinsonian dispensation left to their successors in office. Even supposing the present Ministry were oust rd from power, the whole thing would simply degenerate into a demoralising scramble for the loaves and fishes of office, as it is evident that the majority of the present House intend to keep their seats warm as long as possible, well knowing that another appeal to the country would result in the introduction of much new blood. All interest is at present centred upon the Public Works Statement, which is promised to-night, and providing the “ big railway job ” is not forced upon the House, there appears every probability of the storm-tossed ship of state weathering out the present blow, and getting time to refit for another cruise next session.
