(OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Napjer, Friday, The Supreme Court sittings closed yesterday, and Chief Justice Prendergast proceeded to Wellington overland this morning. William Jarvis Harker had his certificate suspended for two years. Wellington, Friday. Thp body of a man was found in the harbor yesterday. It was subsequently identified as that of Jqhp Scanlon, a ganger on the railway at Masterion. - Benjamin Thatcher, a boardinghousekeeper at the railway works at Pukerua, on the Wellington-Manawatu line, was yesterday fined /20 and costs for sly grog selling. The Exhibition Committee have decided that it is inexpedient that alcoholic liquors be sold at the Industrial Exhibition.
A lumper named Thomas Cook fell down dead last night while working on the Aorangi. The cause is supposed to have been heart disease.
Auckland, Friday. The prisoner Maxwell, charged, with murder at St. Louis, was brought up al the Police Court to-day. The depositions taken in America were read. The prisoner reserved his defence, and was remanded to gaol to await the issue of the Governor’s extradition warrant.
The photographer named Clarke, who was officer to the Hibernian Society, has absconded. He is supposed to have misappropriated about /200. He succeeded in doing this by means of duplicate bank books, one of which was used at the bank and the other shown to the officers of the Lodge, It is also alleged that accusad forged the name of Mr Connolly, one of the trustees, and also the initials of the bank clerk. The Society held a meeting on the subject yesterday, aed that owing to the heavy expense of bringing Clarke back, no actum te tafeen in the matter, Tauranga, Friday. The nominations for a Member to |he House of Representatives took place today when Messrs. Kelly and Grace were nominated. Qn a show of hands there were Kelly 35, Grace 27. A poll was demanded. Christchurch, Friday. W. Watt died suddenly on Wednesday night at the Lough Hotel, Rangiora. A ■’ . Dunedin, Friday. A man named F, Horner attempted suicide last night in the Turkish baths by severely gutting bis arm ; but is likely to recover as he did not reach a main artery. At the police court yesterdey a man named Andrew’s was charged with the larceny of five sapphire stones, value /20, under most peculiar circumstanced j A firm of of jewellers had put up the stones jh n box, and gave it to o to post, <. s A
Some days afterwards the same jewellers had the some stones submitted to them by a lapidary for judgment. It appeared that Andrew’s had picked the box up in a street gutter, and the address being somewhat illegible he opened it, and thought the stones were of no value. After putting them aside for a few days he showed them to his brother-in-law, who took them to n lapidary, and he took them to the jewellers to ascertain their value. The Bench dismissed the case, but blamed Andrew’s for not delivering the box or giving it up to the police.
