CLOSING REGRETTED
CONSULATE AT. AUCKLAND SYMPATHY OF MAYOR (Per Press Association.) „ . AUCKLAND, this day. “I am sure the" community shgres the regret I felt. at having to take leave officially of you.-as consul for Czechoslovakia in New Zealand,’ stated a letter from the Mayor mf Auckland, Sir Ernest Davis, addressed lo Professor R. M. Algie. "If I may say so.” the Mayor added, “you have upheld your office with dignity and distinction, and one canhot escape the conclusion that the circumstances responsible for the closing of the consulate here are repugnant to ;he residents of a British democracy.
“To me, as no doubt to other Aucklanders,. it is extraordinary that repercussions of European developments should be felt in this manner in far-away New Zealand. It forces one to ponder deeply on the causes and to sympathise' whole-heartedly with a smaller ■ nation-victim of ruthless aggression,” the letter' concluded.
