DRIVE IN STATE
PRESIDENT OF FRANCE POPULAR IN LONDON SPEECH BY PRINCESS THANKS TO CHILDREN (Eloc. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Mar. 22, 1.30 p.m.) LONDON, Mar. 21. During to-day's State drive from Victoria station to Buckingham Pallace, the King, and the president of France, M. Lebrun, and the Duke of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent rode in the first carriage, and the Queen, Madame Lebrun, and the Duchesses of Gloucester and Kent in the second.
The procession to the palace was escorted by Lifeguards, and proceeded via Whitehall and the Mall. M. Lebrun constantly acknowledged the thunderous cheers of the crowds.
Upon arrival at the Palace, the Princesses were presented to the visitors. Princess Elizabeth, speaking in French, thanked the children of France for sending her the dolls on the occasion of the recent visit by the King and Queen to France. In response to appeals* from the crowd the King and Queen, the Princesses, and Madame and Monsieur Lebrun appeared on the palace balcony for three and a half minutes. At the State banquet at Buckingham Palace in the evening the King wore an admiral's uniform. The Queen was arrayed in a robed-style white slipper satin wide lace skirt. She wore a diamond tiara necklace and bracelets. <
The French President and M. Lebrun sat to the right mid left of His Majesty respectively. Men in brilliant uniforms and the women wearing costly gowns and jewels occupied the remainder of the horseshoe table.
The guests included Queen Mary, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke and Duchess of Kent, Princesses Royal, Alice, Helene-Victoria and Marie-Louise, the Earl of Athlone, Mr. and Mrs. Neville Chamberlain, members of the Cabinet, Major C. R. Attlee, and ambassadors and diplomats.
