WAINUI ROAD HANDRAILS FEAR OF FATALITY STEPS TO BE TAKEN A fear that a fatal accident might occur at a culvert in Wainui road unless steps were taken to remove the clanger was expressed by the borough engineer, Mr. E. R.. Thomas, at last night's meeting of the Gisborno Borough Council. Handrails are erected at a culvert near the Kaiti School, and Mr. Thomas noted that on March 11 a car hit one Of the rails. The same thing had occurred on a number of occasions during the past few years. "I am inclined to think," Mr. Thomas added, "that the glare from headlights of oncoming cars impair the visibility of drivers, who probably are not aware of the restricted width cf roadway at the culvert. I make the suggestion that the council place a street lamp over this culvert and so improve the visibility before a fatal accident occurs." The Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, M P agreed that the council should do something, .but he wondered whether a light would make much difference.
Cr. Do Costa suggested widening the road at that point.
The Mayor agreed with this and suggested that the engineer should go further into the matter, and prepare a cost of widening. In the meantime, red reflectors might ts placed on handrails.
Mr. Coleman's was idopted.
