WAIROA GOLF CLUB
SPECIAL MEETING HELD SUBSCEIPTIONS RAISED JUNIOR AGE LIMIT (Jli'raiil Correspondent.) A special general meeting of the Wairoa Golf Club was held on Monday evening to deal with the notices of motion in connection with the raising of the age limit for junior members and the increasing of the annual subscriptions of senior members. Mr. 11. Crichton presided over a good attendance of members. Mr. C. Sainsbury, in speaking to his motion, explained that the motion “that the junior age limit rev'ert to 20 yegrs and under” was with the idea of encouraging younger members of the community to take up golf, by making the early years of ■their golf as light financially as possible. The motion was carried unanimously. The chairman explained the reason for increasing the subscription of senior men by 10s a year «nd senior ladies by Os a year. Costs had gone up considerably the last two years and the balance sheet of the previous year clearly showed that extra revenue was essential. Subscriptions Compared
The comparative statement of the subscriptions of clubs in Hawke's Bay on a par with Wairoa clearly showed that nowhere in Hawke's Bay, and he ventured to add, nowhere in New Zealand, was golf as cheap as in Wairoa, where the course compared j more than favourably with other 18- ' hole courses. The Wairoa subscriptions had for many years been far too low. It must be remembered too that the course was now open for the full 12 months of the year, arid it was for this that the subscriptions had been increased by 10s two years ago; even with the suggested increase added, the Wairoa subscription was below any other club of equivalent standing. Mr. Crichton reminded members that for a number of years, the over-, draft of the club had been guaranteed by eight members, and it must not be forgotten that the club had a definite duty towards these guarantors, to see that they were protected; to do this it was necessary not only for the club to pay its way but also to be in a position to reduce its overdraft each year, as had been done the past two years. It was stated that the club was being run more cheaply than most other clubs in a similar position, and with the exception possibly of casual labour this year owing to the advantageous season, the expenses of upkeep of the course could not be reduced, particularly as the matter of an increase in the wages of the greenkeeper had to be faced.
Almost every member present spoke on the subscription increase, and the motion, when put to the meeting, was carried practically unamrnouslv."""'"/
