SOCIAL SECURITY

NEW STATE OFFICES QUARTERS IN GISBORNE Preparations for the housing of the Social Security Department's branch m Gisborne are proceeding apace, and the new offices should be ready for occupation at an early date. No structural alterations to the building in Gladstone r6ad rented by the department are required, and the internal rearrangement of the building is being made with an eye on the fact that the lease is n6t on a long-term basis. The two front windows on the ground floor will form the outer walls of offices for the district registrar and for the inquiry staff, respectively, and a considerable amount of floor-space on this floor is left open to the public, tellers' 'cages, a counter, two interviewing offices, and a larger space for the clerical staff taking up the further enclosures. A counter has been provided for dealings between the public and the clerical staff. In the upstairs portion of the building provision has been made for a chief clerk's office and for a typing room, which will leave the greater part of the floor free for other purposes apart from the demands of the Social Security Department. It is understood that small departmental offices now established in other premises will toe concentrated in the building leased for the new department.
